White filling is comprised of a material known as composite filling, composite filling is a combination of acrylic resin, ceramic particles, powdered glass quartz and silica. Each material helps give the filling a natural tooth-looking finish. The filler materials also serve to reinforce the filling, making it strong and durable.
The average length of time composite filling tends to stay in the mouth is between 7-10 years, however, some may have their composite filling for upwards of 10 years when properly cared for.
Composite fillings are commonly used on teeth toward the front of the face as they help restore the aesthetics of the patient’s smile. When it becomes apparent a filling no longer fits or is discoloured, that’s usually when patients will make an appointment to replace it.
Why would my filling need replacing?
Fillings can only last so long before they need to be replaced with a new one. Fillings are there to shield the weakened tooth, whilst restoring the overall function of the teeth. If the filling no longer fits the tooth as it should, it needs replacing. This will help protect the teeth from further decay.
White fillings tend to naturally lose their strength and comfort as they’re worn down for the wear and tear of everyday life. In some cases, the filling may be put under too much stress and can break. To help preserve the natural tooth beneath, the fillings need to be replaced.
Decay can cause a white filling to become loose, which can speed up the time that it would typically last. When decay is persistent after treatment it is known as ‘recurrent decay’, this is indicative of an improperly bonded filling. Which unfortunately exposes the tooth beneath the filling to all the bacteria the filling should have sealed the tooth from.
Habits centring around oral fixation like chewing on pens or objects can be particularly damaging to the fillings. This also applies to those who grind their teeth, the movement and pressure can cause the filling to come loose.
Can I make my white filling last longer?
White fillings that are well taken care of have a better chance of lasting longer, increasing the duration from between 5-10 to 10-15. The first and most important part of taking care of your mouth is to floss and brush your teeth twice a day.
- Practising healthy choices like quitting smoking and choosing alternatives for foods and drinks with high pigmentation.
- Avoid opening things with your teeth and avoiding chewing non-edible items.
- Wearing a mouth guard whilst sleeping if prone to grinding.
- Wearing a mouth guard during rigorous physical activity.
- Attending routine check-ups every 6 months.
- Avoiding hard foods like hard-boiled sweets, nuts and popcorn.
How does the replacement process work?
The process of replacing a composite filling is very similar to that of it being fitted initially. Patients will first be given anaesthetic to help numb the tooth and surrounding area.
The white filling is then removed by the dentist using a specialised dental drill. The site is then sanitised ahead of retreatment. The dentist will complete the treatment by refilling the area and re-constructing the tooth.
