What is a veneer?

A veneer is a wafer-thin piece of porcelain specifically crafted to fit over the surface of a tooth. Veneers are commonly used for cosmetic reasons to improve the colour, shape and overall look of teeth. Chipped teeth can become whole again with a veneer placed on top, a specific shade of porcelain chosen to provide the perfect, natural complement to your existing teeth.

Also able to close small gaps between teeth, veneers can be applied to an entire set of teeth to achieve a perfectly-formed, white smile, or specific single teeth to correct individual problems.

Whilst the majority of veneers fitted are porcelain, a composite-style material can be used instead. Somewhat cheaper than porcelain, composite veneers aren’t as natural looking and typically don’t last as long.

The ideal option for achieving that perfect ‘Hollywood’ smile without painful braces or intensive teeth whitening, veneers are guaranteed to transform appearance of your teeth.

At your initial consultation with your dentist he/she will inspect your teeth and see if you're suitable for a veneer. Your dentist may ask a number of health orientated questions and then suggest the best possible course of treatment for your circumstances.

To make sure the veneer is securely bonded to the tooth, the outer surface of enamel will be removed. Once all necessary teeth have been prepared, your dentist will then take a mould of your mouth so each individual veneer can be tailor-made to the correct shape. Each veneer will then be bonded to the tooth using a strong super adhesive guaranteed to provide a secure fit.

Ensuring that you keep good care of your veneers by avoiding particularly sticky or chewy food after they have been fitted will protect against damage Maintaining a regular and robust dental health routine will not only protect your veneers from harm but also help avoid the risk of future dental problems.

How long do veneers take?

The first will involve preparing the teeth, and the second to actually fit the veneers. During this visit, your dentist will hold your tailor-made veneers upon your chosen teeth to make sure you’re 100% happy before bonding takes place.

Are veneers painful?

No – typically, veneers are considered a pain-free procedure by the vast majority of patients.

However, during the tooth-preparation process, a local anaesthetic may be administered to avoid any potential sensitivity or discomfort that may occur. Once preparation is over, the actual application of the veneers should be painless.
