X-rays of any kind are considered safe. They work by using ionizing radiation that passes through the soft tissues of the face. This radiation moves through varied materials at varying rates, allowing an image of the mouth to be created.
A panoramic X-ray functions similarly but rotates around the jaw, producing a comprehensive view of the entire mouth. This type of X-ray provides the dentist with a clearer view of all the teeth and the jaw, helping them make a more precise assessment of any problem areas.
Is the radiation used in X-Rays safe for the body?
X-rays are safe for use on the body; however, those trying to conceive or who are pregnant should inform their dentist before having X-rays. Early pregnancy carries a higher risk than the second or third trimesters.
The effects of X-rays during pregnancy are not fully understood, due to ethical restrictions around testing. However, high doses of radiation exposure to the abdomen can increase risks of miscarriage and birth defects. Radiation affects cells on a molecular level, potentially damaging DNA or even destroying cells.
The radiation used for dental X-rays is minimal, so patients typically do not need to worry about excessive exposure from a single X-ray. It is helpful to let your dentist know if you have recently had other X-rays; although the risk is minor, this information can assist them in evaluating the necessity of additional X-rays. In most cases, the health benefits of X-rays far outweigh the small risks of radiation exposure.
Are X-Rays safe for young children?
Because the radiation doses are exceptionally low, X-rays pose little to no risk to children. As with adults, if a child has had multiple X-rays in a brief period, it’s wise to let the dentist know to allow for an informed decision.
X-rays are only taken when necessary, so parents can rest assured that exposure will be minimized to avoid any undue risks.
